Meet interior designer Christine Gatrow, artist Desmond Knox-Leet, and theatre director and set designer Yves Cuslan. In the mid-1960s, they opened a shop at 34 Boulevard Saint-Germain selling designer furniture fabrics, which, however, failed to attract the attention of the local crowd: students, artists, intellectuals. But the interior details attracted attention to the shop windows. And friends began to bring various items from all over the world, including scented candles, sachets, and everything needed for shaving and haircuts. The business took off. And in 1968, the friends launched L’Eau, the first eau de toilette for men and women, under the Diptyque brand. Knox-Litt took on the role of perfumer. As he was inspired by 18th-century pomanders, the debut composition was a blend of green mandarin, ginger and cinnamon. From 1993 onwards, the fragrances were created by Olivier Pescheux and Fabrice Pellegrin, while Olivia Giacobetti blended Philosykos with a note of fig, resulting in a perfume that can undoubtedly be considered one of the most famous niche compositions.
